Karen Malin

President of the San Diego Silk Guild

I’ve always been interested in textiles and creating beautiful wearables, quilts, wall hangings, and pieces of art from gorgeous fabrics. I learned to sew at a very early age and begin quilting in college. After retiring, I took a one day “make a silk scarf “class. I never looked back! The excitement of watching beautiful colors, patterns and textures emerge from the pristine silk as you apply dies, paints, techniques on the way to your creation never diminishes. I’m always surprised at what emerges from this creative process. Once I was immersed in silk painting and dying, I decided to merge this new art form with my love of quilting. The texture, shadows, and intricacies of quilted silk cannot be matched. In addition, the community of silk artists is one of generosity, support, sharing, and and just plain fun. I feel lucky to have discovered this art form and this community, especially the San Diego Silk Guild.
