Laurie Covill
Treasurer of San Diego Silk Guild
Laurie’s art is inspired by the beauty of the natural environment and a desire to protect and preserve it. She incorporates quotes by various naturalists, scientists and artists into her silk paintings. She fell in love with painting on silk after several years of painting in other media, including acrylic and watercolor, exploring photography, lighting design in the theatre and landscape design. She studied Art and received a Bachelors Degree in Art, with an emphasis in painting from the University of California at Santa Barbara. She subsequently earned a Master of Fine Arts in Art, with an emphasis in Environmental Design from San Diego State University. She worked as a landscape designer for 16 years and a teacher for 25 years in San Diego. She taught art and design to college students, art to middle school students and incorporated art into all subjects for students in the primary grades.
She is passionate about all things in nature, especially trees, mountains and the sea. She enjoys walking and hiking in the beautiful parks, and coastlines in California and Whidbey Island, Washington, where she has a second home. She photographs the landscape wherever she goes and uses her images as inspiration for her paintings and scarves. She has always loved textiles, especially silk and experimented with painting on silk several years ago. When she found the San Diego Silk Guild a few years ago, she discovered her true passion for the magic of dyes flowing and blending on silk.
